Memories of Paris!

So recently I got my eat, pray, love on in Paris. I rented an apartment on Ile St Louis and went with one gastronomical mission.....to eat and drink the best there was!  That's right.... I stayed away from all museums, touristy sites, taxis, metros, men, and sadly shopping (I carried on my luggage so there wasn't any room, tear!).  But I did find some incredible places that you must go to when in the city of lights.  Below you will find my ultimate gastronomical itinerary:

Angelina - most famous hot chocolate in Paris right by the Tuileries.  I suggest having a glass of champy with it.  It's so thick, rich, and delicious that you will need to dilute it with hot water (which they serve on the side)

Cafe Ruc - great place by the Louvre for steak frites.  Used to go a lot when I lived there back in the day

Allard - restaurant in St Germain with incredible dover sole and escargots.  I don't even really like escargots but I licked my plate clean!

Auberge de la reine blanche - restaurant on Ile St Louis.  Very small and quaint but extremely busy.  Has been there since my mom first took me when I was 11 years old.  I recommend the dijon chicken and the orange duck.

Bofinger - most famous brasserie for seafood and french onion soup close to the Marais district

Harrys Bar - great international bar with people from all walks of life.  Met some crazy characters here that had me out til 6 am!

Les Deux Magots - famous brasserie featured in "Midnight in Paris" where all the old literary icons would schmooze.  I recommend sitting outside and watching the craziness of St German des Pres

E. Dehillerin - not a restaurant but Julia Child's favorite kitchen supply store.  This place is insane!! The amount of whisks alone will make you cry

Au Pieds De Couchon - best/most famous French onion soup EVER!

Ritz Carlton Hemingway Bar - tiny little bar also known for their literary icons.  Get there right when they open at 630 to find a spot.  It fills up very quick.  You must have a seat at the bar to order.  If no seat is available, forget about ordering.  They will literally have security remove you.  Some of the best rose champagne in the world is served there.  They serve it with a huge red rose inside as well.  When it looks like that, who cares if you are paying $50 a glass :)

Ritz Carlton Bar Vendome - amazing place for afternoon tea and champagne

Le Bristol - on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore, the best shopping street in Paris.  Beautiful hotel and fantasic bar for drinks.

La's du fallafel - most famous falafel in Paris (in the Marais District).  $6 for an entire meal.  Cant beat that!  Only thing annoying is their hours, I went to there 4 times until it was finally open

Le Maurice - gorgeous hotel owned by Dorchester group by the Tuileries.  Very similar to the Ritz Hemingway Bar

Patrick Roger - best/most famous chocolates in paris on St Germain des Pres

Poilane - best/most famous bakery in Paris close to St Germain des Pres.  This is Ina Garten's favorite bakery in Paris as well

Cafe de Flore - right by les deux magots and very similar.  Sit outside and have a glass of champagne and an omelette.  C'est magnifique

New Newport Nummies!

Just wanted to suggest a few new amazing places in Newport to eat.  Pizzeria Mozza on PCH close to Dover has been open for some time now, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be going back over and over again.  Try their meatballs, meat pizza, chopped salad, and butterscotch pudding even though everything is incredible on their menu.  The other new spot is le pain quotidien in fashion island.  It's definitely more of a casual lunch spot to grab when on the go or in a hurry but their open face curry chicken salad salad is the bomb.  I used to get that a lot when I was in la so I am very excited that they finally opened in Orange County!

The Ritz

Sadly The Ritz restaurant will be closing it's doors soon due to them not renewing their lease.  So, this is my suggestion to get in there as soon as possible.  I definitely recommend going at Christmas time because their decorations and food are some of the best in town.  When in Vegas, try their sister restaurant Pieros.  It's off the strip and a combination of The Ritz and Dan Tana's.  Just went last weekend and had an insane meal.  I had the garbage Caesar (caesar with shrimp, cheese, and hearts of palm added), stone crab, and swordfish with a side of pasta.  Yummers!!!  Oh yeah, and don't forget to have a martini!

Feed The Monster

Just wanted to promote my friend's blog!  His name is Sean Robins (my friend Angela's husband) and you can find the blog at feedthemonster.com or feedthemonster.net.  He is an amazingly talented writer and will have you pissing yourself in laughter.  The premise is his quest to eat at every restaurant in Zagat Los Angeles.  This has taken him 14 years since every year he is about to complete the quest, a new Zagat comes out with more restaurants.  He just finished in September and I was there to celebrate at Pink's for his big finale!  It's a fabulous blog that takes you through every moment of his adventure which mostly consists of incredible restaurant reviews and his story behind why he decided to do this in the first place (an extremely heartfelt and inspirational story).  Please enjoy......I believe this is not the last we have heard from "The Monster!"

Secret of An's Garlic Noodles

So, ever wondered why Crustacean's garlic noodles are the most secret recipe in the world?  Well it's because of the simplicity and common ingredients involved.  I think the An family would be embarrassed if people knew the truth.  While in Paris, I met a fabulous woman who has been there and done that all over the world.  She has had private dinners with chefs who personally know the An family and the recipe.  She truly was one of the most inspirational and incredible people I have ever met!  The secret is Heinz ketchup and Kraft Parmesan cheese.  Yes, I have no idea what everything else is but the reason behind the secret are the ingredients that you can find in any old refrigerator from California to Arkansas :).  Who would have thought?!  Certainly not me.

Super Simple Authentic Hot Link Taco Recipe!

This recipe comes from my dear friend/hairdresser in SF, Amanda Ortega.  Her fathers side of the family is Mexican and this is what they serve for appetizers whenever they all get together.

Hot Link Tacos

Hot Links

Cilantro

Red onion

Corn tortillas

Cut the hot links in half lengthwise and grill flat side down.  Chop cilantro and red onion and heat tortillas.  Serve one half hot link with cilantro and red onion in tortilla.  Cut in half if you like.

Slaters 50/50 Burger

Huntington Beach is known as one of the worst cities for dining.  So we always welcome new, tasty, popular restaurants when we finally get them.  This is the case with Slaters 50/50 Burger off Beach and Adams.  This new custom burger (following in the footsteps of The Counter, 25 degrees, etc) joint is delicious!  They are best known for their 50 percent beef 50 percent bacon patty and bacon brownie sundae but their turkey burgers, sweet potato fries, fried pickles, regular fries, milkshakes, sauces, and beer and wine selection are all amazing too!  And, the cool thing is that this restaurant is actually going to make it.  Taking over the doomed Tap House/Flight location, who would have thought that the wait would be 45 minutes at 6 pm on a Sunday??!  And the best part is, they serve until 1:30 am and the bar is open til 2 am.

Anqi on Tuesdays!

Unfortunately, I have heard from a few sources that Anqi in South Coast Plaza just does not compare to it's mother restaurant Crustacean in Beverly Hills.  I used to love Crustacean and would eat their garlic crab, prawns, and noodles quite frequently.  When Anqi opened, I was so excited but due to bad reviews, I still have not been.  However, Greers OC just passed along some very interesting info......

Every Tuesday at Anqi, they will be serving their famous garlic crab and garlic noodles (this is not normally on their menu)!!  You can have the crab shelled with noodles for $48 and de-shelled with noodles for $53.  I have always opted for the de-shelled version because its a lot less messy.  Of course, the An family suggests always getting the crab in the shell because of tradition and flavor.  I know its a steep price to pay, but I promise you will not be disappointed.  I am so looking forward to going on a Tuesday!

Avocado Cafe - the new Jans in Newport!

Well, I never thought in a million years that a Jans would arrive in Newport Beach.  Secretly, I hate going downtown HB to eat, just waaaaay too many memories :).  Anyway, even though it is not an exact Jans franchise, it's the closest substitute I have found south of brookhurst.  Yes ladies, "Avocado Cafe" in Newport/CDM off Avocado has the broccoli cheese soup, tuna, hava chips, guacamole, turkey, salads, bacon bits, sprouts, etc that Jans has.  However, they do offer a few extra luxuries compared to the original like squaw bread and boars head meats.  It is in the middle of an all gentleman's gym but don't let that scare ya, haha.  It was delish!

Starbucks GOLD!

I give major props to Kristina Stonebreaker for letting me in on this valuable tip!  If you frequent Starbucks as regularly as I do (every morning), you need to start earning rewards.  In order to do this, go get yourself a gift card, fill it up, register it online (you will start at green status), and use it every time you go.  Eventually, you will be upgraded to gold status (this happens quick if you are going every day) and Starbucks will send you their gold card.  At gold status, you immediately get free tea and coffee refills, free flavorings and syrups, free drinks on your birthday, etc.  Once you get the gold card in the mail, fill that up and use it every time you go to Starbucks.  After every 15 drinks, you get a free drink and will continue to get more and more rewards :)!

Buena Vista Irish Coffee Recipe!

I recently became a provisional member of the Junior League of San Francisco and purchased their "San Francisco Entertains" cookbook (highly recommend purchasing off the Junior League San Francisco website; all proceeds go to the charities involved with Junior League).  Inside the cookbook you can find specialty menus dedicated to certain holidays and events as well as amazing secret recipes from San Francisco's finest chefs and restaurants (Gary Danko, Fifth Floor, Bottega, Tipsy Pig, etc).  The jewel of the Nile I would say would be the Irish Coffee recipe from Buena Vista.  If you have had one, you know one is never enough.  So instead of spending $12 a coffee, let's make them at home!!

See recipe below for 1 serving:

2 sugar cubes
1/2 cup hot black coffee
1 jigger (1 1/4 ounces) Irish whiskey (Jameson works great here)
Heavy cream, lightly whipped

Fill a 6 ounce, short-stemmed, tulip-shaped coffee glass with very hot water and let stand for 1 to 2 minutes to heat; pour out the water.  Place the sugar cubes in the glass and immediately fill 3/4 full with the hot coffee, stirring to dissolve the sugar.  Stir in the Irish whiskey.  Top with the whipped cream, pouring it over a spoon to form an even head.  Serve piping hot.

Katsu yeah!!!!!

So, I recently found out that one of my favorite LA restaurants is coming to Laguna.....Katsu Ya.  Let me tell you how jealous I am of this!!!!  OC ladies - you better get your rezzies set up asap cause this food is going to hook you forever and I am sure there will be a little wait for this LA institution.  Wanted to recommend a few dishes that I always get.  Some do not appear on the menu because the they are a pain to make, but I say who cares.

Baked crab hand rolls wrapped in soy paper - 1 is never enough.  I always get 2.  I like the sauce but some people don't.  If you are scurred, then get it without.  You are missing out if you do though :)

Rock shrimp tempura - get both sauces (spicy/sweet  is one and creamy is the other) on the side.  they totally drench the shrimp so much in the sauce that it gets soggy, but on the side as a dipper is definitely a winner.

spicy tuna plate - this is different fish, sauce, and avocado wrapped in a cucumber roll (no soy paper or seaweed or rice with this)

4 1/2 cut roll in soy paper - similar to a california roll kind of.  mostly contains rice, sauce, shrimp, tuna, and crab (forget the imitation crab or the avocado though).  this is legit!

yellowtail sashimi with jalapeno - comes with a ponzu sauce as well, delish!

tuna sashimi - I think this comes like the yellowtail sashimi from what I remember

albacore with crispy onions - albacore sashimi with ponzo smothered in crispy onions (I don't even like onions and I eat this up)

last but not least!!! - spicy tuna on crispy rice - spicy tuna and jalapeno on a crispy rice patty.  there are 4 in an order, but I normally get 2 platters of these.  you want at least 2 per person.

This is my favorite sushi restaurant in the whole world.  the recent ones that have opened are rather trendy (which I assume is how the laguna one will be), but if anyone ventures to the original in studio city (my personal fave, always went with Nae Nae:), this will be by far your best Katsu Ya experience.

Chocolate without any guilt = heaven

Long time no food talk, haha

However, I am back with another tasty treat.

The best snacks I have found recently are from whole food's fresh trail mix section.  There are a million types to choose from however the tastiest and one of the lowest calorie options is their chocolate nuts mix.  At only 140 calories a serving and hardly any trans fat, this mix contains peanuts, almonds, dark choc chips, dark choc stars, peanut butter chips, raisins, choc covered raisins, and peanut butter covered raisins.  It's soooooooooooooo fricking good.  Just make sure you get the fresh version where you have to scoop it into a bag.  It's much better than the already pre-sealed versions.

If you aren't a huge chocoholic like I am, there are a million other options to tickle your fancy.  Try em all and enjoy!

Great article on best pizza in the US

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/food-wine/food-and-wine-best-pizza-in-us_b_827096.html#s240077&title=New_York_City

Loved this article on the 25 top pizzas in the US.

The ones I am super familiar with are Pizzeria Mozza in LA, Pizzeria Delfina in SF, Flour + Water in SF, and Pizzeria Bianco in Phoenix.  ALL AMAZEBALLS!

However, there are a ton of other ones in NYC, Chicago, Portland, Boston, Philadelphia, Oakland, and Larkspur that are worth checking out.  Go get yourself some pizza darlins!

Nuts for Nutella!

So, I recently have been having some riDONCulous nutella goodies and wanted to share the many ways one can incorporate nutella into their basic foods to snazz them up (besides crepes which we all know is phenom with bananas)......

Spread on a fresh french baguette

Spread on homemade waffles or pancakes.  waffles is really where it's at.  this was my most favorite afternoon snack when I lived in France.  if the waffles are super hot, the nutella becomes totally ooey gooey!

Spread on cupcakes (basically you are using this as the frosting)

Blend in milkshakes.  I recently had the nutella shake at burger bar here in sf.  they have them in sf, las vegas, and st louis.  the guy from fleur de lys owns them.  absolutely mind blowing!!!!  they blend chocolate ice cream, hot fudge, nutella, and hazelnuts all together then top with choc whipping cream and more hazelnuts.  def one of the top five milkshakes I have ever had.  their other shakes (and of course the burgers) are the bomb diggity too.

Put in fried raviolis like the recipe and pictures below

Dip apples and pineapple or any other sturdy fruit

As a side note, I recently got the hazelnut spread from Whole Foods cause they didn't have Nutella and it's just as good.  it's called Loacker hazelnut spread.

Enjoy!!

Valentine's Recipes

So instead of fighting all the millions of valentine's couples and horrible prix fixe menus in restaurants tonight, we have decided to prepare our own valentine's feast.  Right now, whole foods has a special on gorgeous roses for 19.99 up in sf.  They prob do in Huntington too.  However, the most beautiful roses I have ever found for cheap is at Mothers market.  They are only $10 a bunch and last forever.  We can all thank Lynnie Line for this tip :).

Anthony is making petrole sole with lemon butter for the main course but I am in charge of the starter and dessert.  Just wanted to share my recipes with you girls.

Crab Ravioli with lemon butter

Filling:

1 cup ricotta cheese (8 ounces)

1 cup lump crab meat, such as peekytoe (8 ounces)

coarse salt and freshly ground pepper

1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes

Ravioli:

All purpose flour for baking sheet

90 wonton wrappers (2 12 ounce packages)

1 large egg, lightly beaten, for egg wash

coarse salt

Sauce:

1 stick unsalted butter

2 teaspoons lemon peel, very finely chopped, plus 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice

Fresh chervil for garnish

Mix together the ricotta, crab meat, ½ teaspoon salt, 1/8 teaspoon pepper, and the red pepper flakes.  Lightly flour a baking sheet, working in batches, arrange 45 wonton wrappers on a work surface, keep remaining wrappers covered with a damp towel.  Mound 1 teaspoon crab filling in the center of each.  Brush edges of wrappers with egg wash, and top each with another wrapper.  Press edges to seal.  Cut out circles using a 2 ¼ inch cookie cutter, transfer to baking sheet.  Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.  Working in 2 batches, cook ravioli until they rise to the top, 2 to 3 minutes.  Meanwhile, make the sauce by heating a large skillet over medium heat.  Melt 4 tablespoons butter, and heat until just bubbling and frothy.  Transfer first batch of ravioli to skillet using a slotted spoon, along with about 2 tablespoons cooking liquid.  Add 1 teaspoon chopped lemon peel and 1 teaspoon juice, and swirl to combine.  Transfer to plates.  Repeat with second batch of raviolis.  Garnish with chervil.

Makes 45 raviolis (uncooked ravioli can be froze for up to 3 months)

Chocolate chip banana bread

½ cup butter, melted (or at least softened)
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 over-ripe bananas
2 eggs
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon baking powder
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup chocolate chips

Mix the butter and sugar until there are no lumps. (This is easier if you melt the butter first.)  Add the vanilla and bananas and mix.  Add the eggs, salt, baking soda, baking powder, and a third of the flour.  Mix on low speed — unless you like flinging flour all over the counter.  Add the rest of the flour in two more batches, scraping down the sides in between each addition.  If you’re including chocolate chips, add two-thirds of them and mix briefly.  Flour a pan and pour the batter into the pan and top with the remaining chocolate chips.  Bake at 350° for 45 minutes, let stand in the pan for a few minutes, then remove to a wire rack to cool.

Nutella Raviolis

*****Another item I am planning on making with the extra wonton wrappers from the crab ravioli is Giada DeLaurentis' nutella raviolis.  Thank you Rachael Timoti Zaldo for reminding me about these stunning little beauties!!!  You can find the recipe on Food network.com but it's pretty self explanatory without seeing the recipe.

Fill wonton wrappers with a spoonful of nutella and egg wash the edges so they stick when they fold over.  Make sure they are completely sealed.  Fry in vegetable oil and sprinkle with powdered sugar while they are hot.

Happy Valentines Girls!!! xoxox

Susie Cakes has some competition...

I am die hard Susie Cakes fan but I must say they definitely have some competition with Miette Patisserie here in SF.  I just had their Parisian chocolate macaroon and chocolate cupcake with vanilla butter cream.  Both were incredibly moist, light, and delectable (without being overly rich and heavy)!!!  I would like to bathe in the butter cream actually.  They have tons of flavors of both items and the beer spiked gingerbread cake was rated in the 50 best of the US by Alton Brown.  They do a cupcake in this flavor with vanilla butter cream.  The view from embarkadero on this gorgeous sunny Friday definitely helped their case too :).  Next time in SF, make sure to visit Miette Patisserie at the Ferry Building.

Superbowl stunners!!

Since it's that time of year again (largest day for domestic violence against women ps), I thought I would put two of my all time fave dip recipes.  Most of you reading this have already had one and you know it is the bees f'in knees!!!  But let me tell you, the second one is where it's at too!!  Try both and your superbowl fans will think they have died and gone to heaven and will be thanking the chef til kingdom come.

Queso Dip

One package (the rectangle foiled one) cream cheese

One can chili (can use turkey chili too) no beans

Chopped onions, olives, and jalapenos to taste

Melt together in saucepan

Add shredded cheddar cheese at the end and serve with chips or fingerling potatoes

Hoagie Dip

1 medium onion

2 pickled pepperocini peppers (if using chopped ones already, do to taste)

½ head iceberg lettuce

1 large tomato, halved and seeded

¼ pound deli sliced genoa salami

¼ pound deli sliced prosciutto

¼ pound deli sliced roast turkey

¼ pound deli sloced ham

¼ pound deli sliced provolone

½ cup mayo

1 tablespoon evoo

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 ½ teaspoons dried basil

½ teaspoon red pepper flakes

1 10 to 12 inch round loaf of Italian bread

8 hoagie rolls cut into pieces for dipping

Chop the onion, pepperocini, lettuce and tomato into bite sized pieces.  Dice the meats and cheese.  Combine the chopped veggies, meats, and cheese in a large bowl.  Add the mayo, oil, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes and stir until everything is mixed and tasty.  Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Carve out center of round bread and cut up the inside and hoagie rolls into bite sized pieces.  Place mixture inside round bread and serve with cut up bread.

Great taste without the GUILT!

I love chips!  All sorts of chips, but especially barbeque or cheddar and sour cream.  I hadn't found a good healthy substitute for either flavor until Kettle Brand's Baked Potato Chips in hickory honey barbeque.  The other baked flavors (salt and pepper, and Wisconsin cheddar) are good too however, the hickory honey barbeque will blow your mind!!  They are 65% less fat than the regular version and only contain 120 calories and 3 grams of fat per serving (which is about 20 chips:).  Please go and get yourself a bag!  You will not be disappointed.  And go ahead and splurge a little, have two servings, why frickin not!!

Whole foods phenomenons

Ok, so I recently moved to San Francisco from Orange County and unfortunately, I left behind my beloved Mother's Market, and more specifically, their nayonnaise prepared tuna.  This was absolutely to die for!  I could literally eat it every day for the rest of my life and never get sick of it.  It was healthy without the health taste.  Super crunchy with tons of celery and a lot of great fresh flavor!  I have been on the hunt for a similar tuna and sadly whole foods' prepared tuna just does not cut my craving.  However, while in search of the tuna, I found two AMAZING substitutes for light things to snack on during the day.  My favorite of the two prepared items is the sesame noodles with cucumber.  Its capellini, scallions, cilantro, sesame seeds, and a sesame oil dressing.  This pasta salad is packed with punch and crunch but still uber light and tasty.  The second is the curried chicken salad.  It contains all natural chicken breast, currents, almonds, scallions, canola mayonnaise, curry powder, chutney, and salt and pepper.  This dish has incredible crunch as well!  Can you tell I am a crunch nazi? haha.  Even though both of these items are not as healthy as the tuna, they have so much flavor and density to them that all you need is a very small portion to get you through.  You can find these in the refrigerated, prepared fresh pack section of the market.  Hope you enjoy!!
